Is Joint-Custody Best for Your Family?

Posted on April 08, 2013 in Divorce

AmandaWhen thinking about child custody, the goal should be for both of the parents to be involved in the lives of their children and to eliminate conflict between the parents. While a joint-custody option may seem ideal because both of the parents will be involved, sometimes a sole-custody with a great amount of time-sharing between the other parent can be a better option. Whether or not joint-custody is the ideal situation for your family depends on if you and your ex are on decent terms. The two of you should be able to make decisions together about your children, have shared values, and similar parenting styles. It is best to discuss your specific situation with a skilled family law attorney. Studies have found that joint-custody will only work if the parents can communicate well with each other, and understand their children’s day-to-day life. However, when the parents have different opinions on what is best for their children, sometimes sole-custody can be the better option. For parents who don’t get along as well, when they choose joint-custody, it is more likely that they will end up back in court, than if they had chosen sole-custody. If you can freely communicate with your ex, are flexible, don’t badmouth one another, and are respectful then joint-custody can be a good option for your family. If you feel that you and your ex cannot do any of these things than perhaps joint-custody is not the best choice. For example, if you and your ex have had a difficult divorce and you are having issues deciding on the custody of the children. It may be a better fit for your children for one parent to have sole-custody. In the end, the parent’s main concern should be choosing the best option for their children.
