Sperm Donor Gets a Shock

According to the Chicago Tribune, William Marotta thought that he was doing a good thing by answering a Craigslist ad placed by Jennifer Schreiner and Angela Bauer. The two women are a lesbian couple that was looking for a sperm donor because they wanted to have a baby. Now the state of Kansas is asking for child support for the child as a result of financial difficulties of the couple.
The problem occurred when Schreiner applied for state benefits. She states that she was pressured to give Marotta’s name as the father of the now 3 year old child. This information was used to investigate the private sperm donation. It was revealed that there was a written agreement between the trio stating that he would not be considered the baby’s father and that he would not be responsible for any type of support.
Marotta was quite surprised to find that a petition was filed by the state of Kansas to have him declared as the father of the child and also be deemed financially responsible for the girl. The basis of the claim is a Kansas state law that says that the sperm must be given through a doctor for the donor to be free of any obligation. Marotta performed his donation by simply giving the couple a container of semen. There were no doctors involved in the process. The state is requesting approximately $6000 for medical bills as well as ongoing support.
